My husband came across this story, and I knew I had to share it with you!
Can you imagine your cat going missing for FIVE years, and then turning up clear across the country? Well, that is what happened to Willow the calico cat.
Willow lived in Colorado as a kitten, and she had a micro-chip implanted. Willow escaped her home during some home renovations. Her owner, Jamie Squires, said that they thought Willow had probably encountered a coyote or some other trouble. They definitely never expected her to turn up so many years later.
They got a call from Animal Care & Control in New York City because of the micro-chip implanted in Willow. Jamie and her husband were very skeptical that it could really be Willow, and waited to tell their kids until they knew for sure! And it turned out, it really was Willow!
Willow isn't back home with her Colorado family yet, but they are making the arrangements for her to come back home. There are no clues as to how she wound up in New York City, but it's sure to have been quite an adventure! She is staying with a foster family until she can return home. They don't think she's been on the streets much as she is a very friendly, well-mannered kitty!
My cats aren't microchipped. But, hearing stories like this one - I think I probably should consider it! I know for future kitties that join us, I will microchip them when they are young. Our old boys probably won't do too much escaping or adventuring at this point! Are your pets microchipped? If not, will you ever consider it? (Photo and full story here.)

Great story! Wouldn't that be a thrill? My pets aren't microchipped because they are indoor pets. Since I have no personal experience, I guess I think it makes sense, but I've heard others say we don't know the long-term effects of having it in a body and also, if we allow this for pets, it won't be long before it seems right for humans. Any conspiracy theorists out there have an opinion on this?

Harley and I are both indoor-only cats, but we are still microchipped. My Mommeh just worries that if we ever did manage to get out, there is now way we would find out way back.

Yes, both my springers are micro-chipped. Alex came from a breeder who microchips the pups before they go to their new homes. Baker (a rescue) was also micro-chipped when I got him - I just had to change the records in the registry (and provide paperwork to prove I had adopted him not stolen him!). Baker has a strong hunting instinct and will take advantage of an opportunity to run off (as I have learned!) so I am thankful he is micro-chipped. It is a dangerous world out there for pets, so I find it is best to be extra vigilant for their safety, even if they are indoor pets. So glad Willow's story had a happy ending!
